How Long Does It Take to Walk Across Japan?

Japan Walk Nomad converts your real, everyday step count into distance on a map of Japan. Here's how many days it takes to finish each route, depending on how many steps you take per day.

The assumption: a 70cm stride (adjustable from 50–100cm)

Japan Walk Nomad reads your step count from Android's Health Connect and converts it to distance using a stride length. The default stride is 70cm per step. Since everyone's stride is a little different, you can adjust it anywhere from 50cm to 100cm in the app's settings. The table below uses the default 70cm value.

Setting a longer stride than your actual one will make your progress faster than real life; a shorter one will make it slower. If you're not sure of your exact stride, the 70cm default works fine.

Estimated days by daily step count (at 70cm stride)

The Hokkaido route (Cape Soya to Hakodate, about 530km) is free to play. The full nationwide route (Cape Soya to Shuri Castle, total distance about 2,760km) includes that same 530km stretch and unlocks the rest of the country for a one-time purchase of $4.99 (US pricing) — no subscription.

Daily steps Distance per day Hokkaido (530km) Full route (2,760km)
5,000 steps ~3.5km ~151 days (~5 months) ~789 days (~2 years 2 months)
8,000 steps ~5.6km ~95 days (~3 months) ~493 days (~1 year 4 months)
10,000 steps ~7.0km ~76 days (~2.5 months) ~394 days (~1 year 1 month)
15,000 steps ~10.5km ~51 days (~1.7 months) ~263 days (~8.7 months)

These are simple estimates assuming a consistent daily step count. In practice, your actual daily steps are what count — a day with more steps moves you further, and a rest day just pauses your progress, so the total time will vary with your real activity.
